What is XAT?
XAT (Xavier Aptitude Test) is India's second most prestigious MBA entrance exam after CAT, primarily for admission to XLRI Jamshedpur (one of India's top 5 B-schools) and 150+ other MBA programs. XAT is unique for its Decision Making section — a case-study-based section that tests ethical reasoning and business judgment.
XLRI Jamshedpur (XAT score required) consistently ranks in the top 5 MBA programs in India. HRM and BM programs at XLRI place graduates in consulting, FMCG, and finance roles with packages of ₹18-30 LPA. XIMB, TAPMI, LIBA are strong fallbacks.

What is Decision Making in XAT?
XAT's Decision Making section (21Q) presents business scenarios with ethical dilemmas, managerial situations, or case studies. You choose the best course of action from 4-5 options. It cannot be prepared through formulas — practice is essential.
What is a good XAT score for XLRI?
For XLRI BM (Business Management): 99.5+ percentile overall with strong sectionals. For XLRI HRM: 97+ overall. For XIMB: 95+. For TAPMI/LIBA: 85-90+.
Is XAT accepted by IIMs?
No. IIMs accept only CAT. XAT is for XLRI and its partner institutes. However, many top non-IIM MBA colleges accept both CAT and XAT.
Does XAT have negative marking?
Yes. -0.25 for wrong answers. XAT also penalizes for more than 8 unattempted questions in Part 1 (-0.10 per unattempted beyond 8). Attempt strategically.
What is the XAT Essay section?
Starting from recent years, XLRI separately asks shortlisted candidates to write an essay at the time of GD-PI. The XAT exam itself has GK + 3 sections.
